JELD-WEN DOORS WITHSTAND LIVERPOOL FLAT BREAK IN
One of the UK’s leading door manufacturers JELD-WEN was congratulated on the quality of its product recently by a police officer who oversees crime prevention through housing design.
Force Architectural Liaison Officer with Merseyside Police, PC Paul Martin, was commenting on the robust doorsets supplied to Liverpool social housing provider One Vision Housing, which had successfully resisted a serious break-in.
JELD-WEN supplied more than 200 Secured by Design accredited timber doorsets to One Vision Housing for use in three high rise apartment blocks in the Sefton area of the city. Secured by Design is a crime prevention initiative approved by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) that supports the building industry in ‘designing out’ crime in homes and commercial premises. Only companies, such as JELD-WEN, which manufacture to the highest standards and have passed stringent test criteria are licensed to label their products as being “Secured by Design”.
The attempted break-in took place in the Chapel House block during the daytime when the occupants were out.
PC Martin explains: “There had been a concerted effort to enter the apartment, both by kicking the door and attempting to expose the central lock, probably with a crowbar or large screwdriver. However, the door held firm, as you would expect with this robust construction and multi-point locking system.”
He adds: “High rise blocks can become a target for burglaries, partly because in the past they were often fitted with inferior quality doors. The use of JELD-WEN’s Secured By Design doors really paid off in this location.”
One Vision Housing manages 11,700 homes in Merseyside and has invested more than £35m over recent years upgrading the properties, including improving home security measures.
The housing association selected JELD-WEN’s Secure-Fit Flat Entrance Doorset, which is fitted with a door viewer as standard and specially designed seals to improve acoustic performance and resist smoke.
Gordon Ronald, Operational Director for Assets and Regeneration at One Vision Housing said:
“We are committed to ensuring that all of our customers feel safe and secure in their homes. Our Property Standard requires all of our refurbishments to be of a very high standard, using secure by design products wherever possible and that is why we have invested in these top quality doorsets.”
JELD-WEN’s Technical Director Ian Purkis said:”During the research and development stage, our doorsets are extensively tested for resistance to forced entry, so it is rewarding to hear of real life cases like this where they have protected a family from what could have been a very serious burglary. It is testament to the robust nature and performance of these doorsets that they withstood the rigours of the attack inflicted on them, demonstrating their suitability for social housing in urban areas.”
JELD-WEN recently introduced a range of SecureFit entrance doorsets which have a 60 minute fire-rating, to offer enhanced fire protection for occupants. The new FD60 SecureFit Flat entrance doorsets are available in popular real wood veneers, including ash, oak and beech. The 54mm thick doors meet with Secured by Design accreditation and feature acoustic and drop down seals, which assist the product in compliance with acoustic regulations, where apartment entrance doors have a sound reduction requirement.
