JELD-WEN WINDOWS CHOSEN IN SYMPATHETIC RESTORATION
Timber windows often play an important part in the planning process and achieving an authentic look to a refurbished building. This was certainly the case for the renovation of a number of apartment buildings at the Victorian-style Wordsley Hospital near Stourbridge, a major development being undertaken by Shropshire Homes.
The housebuilder specified JELD-WEN’s vertical sliding sash windows on all levels of both the renovation and the new build (pictured) for Block 2, which were supplied with conservation fret to enhance the building’s historic appearance.
The most recent installation of JELD-WEN windows was for the refurbished clock tower and attached new build extension, which has created 18 stunning one and two bedroom apartments. The windows were supplied to bespoke dimensions and with a unique 100mm depth to the bottom rail of each lower sash to replicate the traditional style of this magnificent Victorian building.
The vertical sliding sash windows were double glazed, rather than like the single glazed styles they replaced to ensure they met modern performance requirements. Not only do these windows offer stunning aesthetics and meet latest Part L requirements, they are also extremely easy to clean due to their innovative tilt and turn functionality, which means the glass can be cleaned from the inside.
JELD-WEN’s Sovereign Stormsure casement windows, which are renowned for their thermal performance, were supplied to the Dormer roof of the clock tower building. These were fitted into GRP pre-formed dormers in a style that enhanced the aesthetics of the development.
JELD-WEN’s timber Clifton patio doorsets were specified, again to bespoke sizes, on each of the three levels, with double leaf doors on the ground and first floor levels and a single Clifton door on the upper level, introducing more light into this stunning building.
Both the ground and first floors of Blocks 13 and 14 on the development were also supplied with bespoke size frames from JELD-WEN’s Hi-Profile Combi window range, again to meet the local planning requirements.
All the windows and doorsets were factory finished in Gardenia (cream colour) to further enhance their performance and prolong their longevity.
Wordsley Hospital is a historic building, which was built as a workhouse in 1903 and became a hospital after the First World War. The imposing red brick structure with its acclaimed and recognisable clock tower will provide 83 apartment dwellings across the whole development.
JELD-WEN was awarded the contract following a detailed site survey carried out by Chris Smith in conjunction with Shropshire Homes’ Ian Norris.
Ian Norris, Senior Buyer from Shropshire Homes, said: “We specified JELD-WEN windows as we were aware of their bespoke capabilities, especially in producing sliding sash windows in a conservation style. It was so important on this project that the windows and doorsets had an authentic appearance, yet could meet modern thermal performance requirements and JELD-WEN achieved this perfectly.”
He continues: “We had worked with JELD-WEN before and were confident in the quality and reliability of their manufacturing process. The result is a stunning development that retains the aesthetics of this striking building, creating appealing apartments that are already gaining lots of interest.”
Chris Smith, Sales Representative at JELD-WEN, who managed the project: “We were delighted to supply this prestigious development. Our timber windows are really popular with refurbishments or new builds in conservation areas, where planning requirements are stringent. Our bespoke capabilities meant we could deliver exactly the specification of windows and doorsets to meet the client’s requirements. The fact that they were supplied with a hi-build factory finish means they will benefit from a far superior appearance and an extended lifespan.”
JELD-WEN is one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of timber windows, doorsets and patio doors.
